Do You Need To See Avatar (2009) To Understand the Sequel?
There are a lot of callbacks and characters from the first movie making an appearance in the 2nd.
We’d suggest watching Avatar on Disney+ first before seeing this one for the most clarity.
Can you get by without it? Yes. But it definitely helps if you see the other one first.
It also helps if you can compare the two movies since they are fairly similar when trying to decide if Avatar: The Way of Water is too scary for kids.

Violence and Gore: Is Avatar: The Way of Water Too Scary For Kids Under 8?
There are some intense action sequences in the movie.
While it isn’t particularly gory, it definitely is intense.
There are a couple of jump scares, animal attacks, war scenes, major explosions, fire destruction, near-deaths, and deaths.
Corpses are shown (animal and human).

One scene, in particular, is incredibly intense when a sharklike creature chases one of the children through a reef.
If you have a child who doesn’t like sharks or sea creature jump scares, this might be too much for them.
If you see this in 3D, be prepared for a kid in your lap!
Characters are impaled, shot in the face with arrows and axes, and one has an arm ripped off by a large cable.
You see the amputated limb flying in the air from afar, so it’s not too gory- but enough to get the idea.
Violence and language are the biggest trigger factors for the PG-13 rating, so keep that in mind when deciding if your younger child can handle it.

Parents Guide: Is Avatar: The Way of Water Appropriate For Kids Under 8?
If your kids have seen Avatar (2009) and enjoyed it, they are probably safe to watch Avatar 2 as it’s generally more of the same.
It’s actually very much more of the same as the plot doesn’t change too much from the first film.
For younger kids who have seen the previous movie before, the biggest concern parents may have about seeing this one in the theater is the length.
Avatar: The Way of Water is over 3 hours long, and that’s a really long time for younger kids to sit through.
Even if you know when to pee during Avatar: The Way of Water, this movie not only runs long but feels long as well.
We think kids ages 10 and up could likely watch Avatar as long as language and the overall violence is not a concern for a sensitive child. How about younger children?
If your family is ok with war-like violence (guns, arrows, explosions) and your 8-year-old has seen similar movies (Marvel, Star Wars, etc), then Avatar 2 will be ok for them as well.
But we’d suggest previewing it before letting the little sit in the theater since it is incredibly long.
