Are you traveling to Walt Disney World for the big Marathon Weekend this year? Disney people and runners are planners and I know you might be looking for runDisney marathon tips. I’ve put together some of the most helpful runDisney Marathon advice I’ve found to help you with your racecation!
The Most Helpful runDisney Marathon Advice EVER
Team runDisney member Sam was super helpful as he made sure to give a tip every day for the past couple of weeks.
I pulled a few of them out that spoke to me.
Like this one:
I’ve run a race without music before. It was awful.
I could not imagine doing that for a full 26.2 though my BRF Julie did it last year!
Kelly: you are BRILLIANT in all caps.
I chafe like a mofo with certain bras and conditions.
Florida is the condition. Ha. I don’t think I’ve ever run a race there and NOT chaffed under my bra somewhere.
Fair enough.
Lots of stinky shoes in tight quarters. This could help you out.
And Mousekeeping won’t mind it either!
Yes. Yes and YES.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten a spare suitcase or duffle. I overpack to begin with, but then I tend to over-buy as well… and you can see the problem.
Taking a spare suitcase or one with extra room and filling it with food can be an awesome savings tip. Especially if you are flying Southwest and have those two bags free!
ALL the water. Now. Start now. (Well- you know what I mean. Ha. Be smart!)
Even if you aren’t running until Sunday, just go ahead and get some water.
I’ll wait ’til you get back. No worries.
Got that water? Ok, cool. Keep reading.
The hair tie: yep. I’ve busted one in the middle of a race, and it threw me completely off.
I was so thankful to have the visor that day!
More runDisney Marathon Tips
Here are a few more:
- Trial size hand sanitizer for when the portlets run out – they do!
- Bringing your traditional pre-race breakfast from home. We always bring bagels and then run to a grocery store to get other essentials. (Nothing new on race day, right?)
- Bring your sunglasses to the start line! Although it’s pitch black standing in the corrals, the sun comes up while you’re running.
- A&D ointment works in place of Body Glide. Also Vaseline, deodorant, and chapstick.
- Rock tape on hot spots on your feet if you blister.
- Extension cords for the room, to more easily charge watches and phones each night.
- If you need throw away clothes hit up Goodwill or the cheesy gift shops off property.
- Sunscreen!
- For a Disney race, let go of your time/need to PR. That’s just not what these races are about. They’re about the course, the sights, the characters and the experience. Enjoy it, savor it, and don’t worry about your pace, splits or finish time.
- Plastic Baggie for money, cell phone, anything that can’t get wet. It could be raining, it could be 2,000% humidity, it could be both. Either way, dry phones are good.
- Baby wipes in your checked bag if you plan on changing after the race.
- If it’s going to be a little chilly out, take a pair of old trouser socks and cut out the toes. Instant arm sleeves to keep your arms warm. Once you get going, you can toss them in the trash can.
- I like to wear a hydration pack for half and whole: extra room to stuff extra snacks and clothes for wait in corrals. Plus plenty of water and you don’t half to rely on aid stations-especially the beginning ones that are crowded.
- Mylar blankets from Amazon or previous races: bring em. Or buy $.99 blankets to sit on in the corrals.
Good luck, runner friends! Do you have any tips or marathon advice you’d like to add to this list for the runDisney Marathon runners?

Thank you for all of the tips. I think I'm ready but I'm getting very nervous so reading all of this really does help. I felt pretty confident but now it's sounding like my husband may not be able to make the trip with me, and knowing he won't be there to cheer me on has shaken my confidence a little :/

Oh you are going to do GREAT Becky! I get that feeling- mine wasn't there either and I wasn't happy about that. But I made it, and you will too! I'll be out around mile 14 just outside of AK--- holding a big ol' Hamilton inspired sign!

The best tip I have is to pack at least one power strip for the room. that way everyone can charge their electronics at once. Speaking of charging electronics, I highly recommend to charge everything (garmin, headphones, ipod, etc) as soon as you get back in the room as you are showering and then turn everything off and store it. It makes the evening before going to sleep so much better!

Great list! I agree with the dryer sheet in shoes and suitcase. I keep dryer sheets in my suitcases at all times - then next time I open one up to use it, I am always grateful for no lingering odors. When I fly Delta to a race, I grab one or two of the in-flight blankets to use pre-race as a cover-up or to put on the ground to sit on. As you look around before races, you will spot other red blanketed Delta flyers.

Ha! I hadn't thought about that. Delta may be the only airline left with the blanket perks!
