Did You Know This About Hocus Pocus?
The movie is practically on every single day (sometimes twice or more!) the entire month of October. So it was clearly a huge hit, right?
Wrong!
Hocus Pocus was NOT a big Disney blockbuster hit.
In fact, it likely lost money when it was released in theaters in July of 1993. Even the adorable Thackery Binx couldn’t bring box office gold.
When Hocus Pocus landed on television (The Disney Channel, Freeform 31 Nights of Halloween) it really took off.
You can watch Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+.

About Hocus Pocus 2
It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge.
Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.

About Salem MA
Salem Massachusetts isn’t just a bunch of Hocus Pocus!
It has a rich history and a small-town feel. You’ll delight in the 17th-century homes still standing throughout central Salem and the gorgeous ocean views.
Founded by immigrants from Cape Cod, the town was named Salem, which is derived from the Hebrew word for peace.
The streets of Salem are most known for the infamous Salem Witch Trials of the 1700s; be sure to stop at the Salem Witch Museum in downtown Salem.
You can consider this a great place to visit any time of year, however, the month of October is clearly the most popular. If you’re going for a day trip to Salem, here’s what you should do while you’re there.
Hocus Pocus enthusiasts have made visiting in the spooky season a must-do!

2023 Hocus Pocus Tour In Salem, MA
We laid out this tour to start in the Salem Commons and end at Old Burial Hill cemetery.
If you were to walk the entire way, it will take around 2 and a half hours and you’ll cover 6+ miles.
That’s a considerable amount of walking, especially with young kids!
Most of the filming locations can be covered on foot, but the final destination may need car transportation.

1. Salem Commons
Quite a few scenes took place in the Salem Commons which is a large common green space.
It’s one of the more popular Hocus Pocus locations. In fact, every October the movie is screened on the Commons often.
Keep an eye out for the basketball court and the Salem Common Bandstand.

2. John Bailey High School, aka Max and Allison’s School – 22-98 S Washington Square
This was once known as Phillips Elementary School, but it actually closed down in 1992.
That made it the perfect location to double as John Baily High School.
3. Salem MA Hocus Pocus Tour: Old Town Hall – 32 Derby Square
The iconic scene where the Sanderson sisters take the stage and sing, “Put A Spell on You” takes place at the Old Town Hall.

4. Bonus Stop Salem MA Hocus Pocus Tour: Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery
While this stop doesn’t have anything to do with the filming of Hocus Pocus, it does have something for the big Hocus Pocus fans.
A very cool statue of Winnifred Sanders is located inside the museum that has creepy characters from all manner of Hollywood horror movies.
If you like horror and old monster movies, this is a MUST-DO in Salem.
Winnie’s statue is awesome- pictures inside are strictly forbidden, however.
Get your tickets in advance here.

5. Allison’s House- Ropes Mansion at 318 Essex Street
This home is absolutely stunning!
Spoiler alert: the outside was the only part of it used in the movie.
The interior scenes were all sound stage.
It’s currently the home of the Peabody Essex Museum and has gorgeous gardens available to the public in the back.
The gardens are free to the public and we highly recommend taking a quick tour through them when you visit on your Hocus Pocus tour in Salem.

6. The Hocus Pocus House, aka Max And Dani’s House – 4 Ocean Avenue
The Dennison house is on the typical itinerary for visitors to Salem.
This one, however, is a private residence.
If you visit Max and Dani’s house, the owners request you take your pictures from the other side of the street. Please be respectful of their home & neighborhood.
Many scenes took place here, including when Dani was abducted by the Sanderson sisters.

7. Thackery Binx Village – Salem Pioneer Village in Forest River Park
98 West Avenue
In the opening scenes of the movie, we see a young teen cursed and turned into an eternal cat.
That series of events was filmed in Salem Pioneer Village, the oldest living history museum in the country.
Please note: it’s only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4 pm.

8. Old Burial Hill- Marblehead, MA
This is another early movie scene that doesn’t take place in Salem.
It’s in nearby Marblehead so go ahead and plan to drive to this location.
As a reminder, this is where Max takes a “shortcut” and ends up being bullied in the cemetery.

This cemetery was probably one of the most beautiful locations we saw on the Hocus Pocus Salem MA tour we took.
So don’t skip this stop if you can get out there!
Taking an Uber or Lyft wouldn’t cost too much and it’s worth the extra location.

This simple Hocus Pocus Tour map lays out the general direction you might want to take.
As you can see, the last two stops are a distance from each other, so go ahead and call that Uber to Old Burial Hill!

Are There More Salem Filming Locations In Hocus Pocus 2?
We’re predicting that Disney’s blockbuster movie Hocus Pocus 2 will become a cult classic just like the original Hocus Pocus.
So will we be adding more stops to the Salem Hocus Pocus movie tour?
Unfortunately no.
The majority of the movie was filmed in Rhode Island this time around. But Disney has confirmed that a Hocus Pocus 3 is in the works, so we’ll update if they make Salem, MA a filming location.
