Captain America 5K Race Re-Cap
A couple of weeks ago my 11-year-old daughter and I had an epic runDisney race weekend. It was the first trip I’d taken with her to a race and I wasn’t sure about running with kids.
It started off a little rocky with a delayed flight, some lost luggage (sob- I was not about that life!), and a small fender bender (more on that later) but in the end, it all worked out.

Of COURSE I took the American Touriser Captain America bag to the Captain America 5K.
And it was fabulous running with her.
She impressed the heck out of me, to be honest! I thought she would be nervous about the crowds and the hoopla around it, not to mention the miles.
But she took everything in stride. She asked a lot of questions and she rocked her costume. Which, you know, was the most important part.
EXPO
We arrived at our hotel after a change in cars- because not only did I lose my luggage, but my driver was rearended right before picking us up. (I told you it started off rocky!).
First things first: expo time! Our friend Julia was over there waiting on us, so we headed over.
We did the required things like pick up bibs and t-shirts, and then we headed in for the fun. We stopped to check out the medals, did a little merchandise shopping (which, my dear runDisney, I thought was FABULOUS for this race. I had to give big thumbs up to the choices we had!).
And of course, we stopped and did the very runDisney-est thing you can do: meet Jeff Galloway.
Me: Claire, he’s an Olympian!
Her: I can read, Mom.
And she’s my least sassy child. Ahem.
5K RACE DAY
We got up early, got to the corrals, and waited. And she was totally ok with it all.
She loved listening to the announcers and seeing all the fun costumes, but she was ready to GO!
And go she did!
Here was my game plan: take the 5K nice and easy doing 15 second run and 45 walk. I knew she wanted to see the parks later and we had a 10K coming up, so this needed to be a slower pace.
Here was her game plan: Omgeeeee— I’m running!
So yeah, we were not on the same page. I spent a lot of energy trying to catch up to her (she runs much faster and longer than I do) and she was wearing me out! But it was only 3.1 miles so I sucked it up and kept up as best I could.
She really got into the whole experience! She was pointing out touches like the marquee sign and the music we heard through the parks.
We decided not to stop for any characters because Julia had run ahead so we could get a Captain America picture. I didn’t know what that line would look like, so we mostly kept moving.
So. Dang. Proud. Go Claire GO!
We finally heard from Julia that she was in line for Cap and we moved as fast as we could to get in that line. I was most worried that they would start cutting people off, but every line we saw seemed to be open and still accepting runners.
And finally, we made it through the castle and to Cap himself.
He noticed right off the bat that we were doing a little Civil War thing and said he loved it. Well, we love you, Captain.
After this picture we headed down Main Street, USA, and found our friendly neighborhood Spiderman waving to us.
I was glad to see they added him to the course and hoped that meant Doctor Strange would show up for the 10K.
Through Downtown Disney and off to the finish line we flew.
Well, we didn’t fly, but we had a goal to finish under 16 minute miles and we did make it. Just barely.
I’m so proud of Claire and how she handled this race! I had hgih hopes for the 10K the next day now that she had one experience under her belt.
She loved the whole thing and said she didn’t even mind running.
Hey girl, you are just like your momma when it comes to runDisney.
