Shenanigans Channels Her Inner Princess (2011 Part 1)

And walks a half marathon in the process.

Lets travel back in time to June 2010.  Picture if you will an online forum filled with mothers of children born in April 2005.  We shall call this group the Mother Runners, or MRs, for purposes of this blog.

The MRs have been key in my life since we met while pregnant.  We just didn’t know what an impact we would have on each other back then in October 2004 on Baby Center.

We got through a couple of tough elections (hello Bush, hello Obama), some hilarious and sometimes vicious cyber fights, births of our adorable April 2005 children, and the death of my special little man, Jacob.  These moms have been through it all and have stood by each other through divorce, heartache, heartbreak, illness, death, marriage, births, graduations, financial hardships, well… life.  I love the April moms.  All of them.  With a few exceptions.  And by now they probably know who they are.  Ahem.  But we can save that for another posting.

Inside this large group is a smaller group of the MRs, the ladies who run for health (both physical and mental), for weight loss, for PRs, and for a large group of us, for Disney.

Ahhh, yes, the D word.  It will be a recurring theme.  I love Disney.  I really really REALLY love Disney.  I could post an entire blog on the reasons why Disney rocks my world, but since there are many such blogs devoted to the topic, I won’t clog cyberspace with more of the same.  Just know that Disney will be mentioned time and time again with faith, trust and pixie dust sprinkled along the way.

There we are- June 2010, and MR *S* pipes up about the Disney Princess Half Marathon. Anyone ever done it?  Want to do it?  Thinking about doing it?   Um, yes please!  I was all in… except for that pesky 13.1 miles.  I hated to run anything longer than 5K.  I did one 10K a year, and had to train up for it.  Doing 13.1 was never ever ever on my radar.  Until she said “Disney.”

Hell yeah, I’m in.

There was some subtle hints to Mr. Shenanigans about taking a girls trip for this.  And then some not so subtle hints.  And then a flat out plea to let me go.  He said yes, of course.  He’s pretty awesome like that.

I signed up with an estimated finish time of just under 3 hrs.  Later I submitted a 10K time that got me bumped up in corrals to B.  This turned out to be a major blessing.  If I had started back in the corral I *should* have started, I would have been swept from the course.

Okay, so I sign up, and I guess in all my excitement and celebration, I went and got pregnant. Only me.  Fear not- even with a baby on board, I was going to be a Princess, dammit.  A fertile Princess apparently.  I wanted that medal so very much.  And it was like getting a 2 for 1 deal on the registration.

Hell yeah, I’m in.

I walked, and walked, and walked for training.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to run it, but I could do all 13.1 walking.  Another MR who signed up, only to fall to an injury during training, decided to walk with me.  This was another major blessing.  She motivated and moved me and walked faster than me, which helped me keep pace.  Thank you MR *A*!

Getting ready to cross into the MK parking lot.  Was feeling great at this point.

I have to make a confession.  At the time, I hated- and I do mean, hated, this experience.  I am a mental head case in a lot of things, and running is probably right up there with dieting.  If it’s not FUN, I don’t like it.  If it isn’t at least kinda easy, I don’t like it.  If it doesn’t meet my expectations, I don’t like it.  If it takes too long, I don’t like it.  If it’s too hot, I don’t like it. If it’s too cold, I don’t like it. If something is rubbing me in the wrong spot, I really do not like it!

About 7 miles in, I decided I do not like this whole 13.1 miles crap- I was totally Calling Shenanigans.
