Avengers Half Marathon Weekend | Costume Reveal
I bounced all over the map when it came to costume ideas for this year’s Avengers Half Marathon.
I originally thought to do a Peggy Carter look for the 10K and a Guardians of the Galaxy group plan for the half. I was truthfully worried about keeping the Peggy signature red hat on throughout the run because I remember those Santa Ana winds all too well!
So I changed from Peggy to an Agent of SHIELD when I discovered just how bad-ass Agents May and Coulson are.
Y’all. Quick side note here:
I love love love this show hard. If you aren’t watching it, do yourself a huge Netflix favor and put it in your queue. It’s smart, it’s funny, it’s action-packed, it has a flying car… I mean, really, it has it all.
Captain America 10K
Somewhere in the planning this all changed again. My friend decided to be Falcon.
I LOVE Falcon.
Gosh- I love everyone in Marvel apparently. Ha.
But really, Falcon is cool. I figured if she was going to be Falcon she needed a Cap to go with him. Plus this is the Captain America 10K. You can’t go wrong with running as one of a zillion Captain’s, right? Yeah- I know, I usually suggest going against the theme but I do love me some Cap.
Long story to say: that’s how this Captain America, Winter Soldier version was born.
Since Under Armour still doesn’t have an option for ladies (grumble grumble), I had to grab the tech shirt elsewhere. It’s also a man’s shirt, but after a few size trials I managed to find something that will work.
Protip: go shopping for Halloween costumes on November 1. I scored a boys Captain America costume for $12, and I pilfered parts to spruce up the plain tech shirt. The belt, shoulder harness, boot covers, and wrist wraps all came off that costume, and I hand sewed or velcroed them on my shirt. I bought these gloves and this hat to complete the look. The Sparkle Skirt was already mine, of course.
I’m borrowing a shield from a friend, so I’ll run with that as well. And I added the “On Your Left” quote on the back. (Thanks, Nicole, for the fabulous vinyl work!).
Avengers Half Marathon
My Guardians idea was to be Star Lord. But I was drawing a complete and total blank on how to make that one work. I’d either be running in a leather coat or a mask or both… and I just wasn’t feeling it. And he’s not really an Avenger anyway, right? At least not at this point in the movies (don’t talk comic book to me because my eyes glaze over).
Then the adorable Paul Rudd as Ant-Man entered my life.
(Side note- know who’s also in this movie? That’s right- Falcon. Falcon was meant to influence my race costumes in some round about way!)
Ant-Man himself was out (again with the mask issue) but I knew there was something in this movie I could pull off.
While entertaining myself with Ant-Man inspired DubSmash vids one afternoon, I had an epiphany.
You know what they say: Baskin Robbins always finds out.
I already had the skirt and the shirt covered in my closet. I ordered the hat and apron from Amazon and talked to my vinyl supplier who went beyond my expectations on this one. Seriously- I owe you, Nicole!
All I had to do was line things up, find an iron (no, really- I had to find it because we don’t use it much around here!) and BOOM! Costume number 2 complete.
Now that the training runs are complete and the costumes assembled, I think I’m ready for these races!
If the Santa Ana’s come back, I should be comfortable in both costumes. I have long sleeve options for both though last year I was comfortable with short sleeves in the 50s and winds that we encountered once we got moving.
ETA: I just checked the course map. SCORE. The new half map has us running right by a Baskin Robbins. It was fate!
Who is your favorite Marvel character? Who would you like to see running at Avengers this weekend?
Patty Holliday has been running Disney since 2011. She knows just about every tip, trick, and hack there is to cover the runDisney Magical Miles at Disney World and Disneyland. She knows every mile isn’t *always* magical- but with training, tips, and a little bit of pixie dust, they can be a lot of fun! You can also find her at noguiltlife.com and noguiltfangirl.com
How much time do you have for my favorite Marvel character list? :). My answer would vary though depending on whether it’s MCU, non-MCU or comics. I will take the easy way out and say I was indoctrinated by Spidey thanks to the hubs and you know I love me some Falcon too…
I am excited to see the costumes this year!
I’m actually just excited to be going again this year (and that I get to see you).
Ha ha ha! I know, I know. I think we get some Spidey action this weekend! You should be happy about that. Can’t wait to see you again S!
On your left!! Thanks Halloween store for inspiring Falcon. I love both costumes!
I still find this hilarious since you are clearly the faster one. I’m sure I’ll be getting the “on your left” as people pass me all day. LOL!!!
Patty, I love your costumes. Have a great time this weekend!!
Thanks Christi!
So awesome!
ps- best email address EVER. LOL!!!!
