Super Heroes 101
That time Sarah ran the Super Hero weekend in California with some very exited Marvel fans as roomates. She’s sharing what its like to be a non-Marvel person surrounded by a bunch of insane Marvel-loving fangirls on the run!”

We’re re-sharing this one as part of Way Back Wednesday. When runDisney used to have superhero races and when Sarah didn’t know the difference between a Kree, a Groot, or a Dr. Strange… but dressed up as Thor and ran as part of Team Revengers anyway. – Patty
Super Heroes 101!
November was a crazy month of travel and running for me!
Probably the most notable was when I decided – at the VERY last minute – to fly out to CA to run in the last runDisney East Coast Races: Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend!
So, I runDisney. A lot.
More on that later, but because I runDisney so much, I didn’t really think too much about canceling my trip to Tinker Bell in 2016.
And then again in 2017… and then canceling Disneyland Half Marathon in 2017 as well.
Because I get to do so many of them… it wasn’t a big deal. There’s always next year…
And then- dun dun duuuunnn!
You know where I’m going with this.
When Disney announced they were canceling the races at Disneyland for the foreseeable future… I was crushed. I couldn’t believe I canceled those races I had planned to run, and I wouldn’t get a chance to go run there again.
Andplusalso, I was missing out on the last Coast to Coast Challenge medal.
However.
Super Heroes.
There was still time!
I had a few weeks until the race, I had a bib available, I had Wine & Dine the weekend before so I was trained, Patty graciously offered me a spot in her room, my dad graciously offered me miles for a plane ticket, I had a leftover free three day park hopper from an Agent Education Program I went to earlier this year AND my husband offered to be SuperDad for one last weekend of my shenanigans.
And that was that. Everything kind of just fell into my lap.

Now, I was never really interested in running the Super Heroes race because I really know very little about Super Heroes.
I know some basics.
I’ve seen Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, The Avengers and on the plane to LA, I saw Guardians of the Galaxy.
And I stayed awake about 96% of the time, so I pretty much know the basics.
But – guys – that’s just not enough.
There are SO many movies. SO many inside jokes. And I know SO little.
Here’s a list of things I learned over the weekend about Super Heroes:
1) Hela is spelled with one L. She has crazy hair and is a mean chick.
2) Loki is bad, but really he isn’t all that bad. Maybe he’s just more misunderstood…
3) Spider-Man is ADORABLE.
4) Running in a cape is nowhere near as annoying as you’d think it would be. Same goes for running in a tutu, but that’s less Super Heroes-y so less important to this list.
5) The infinity gauntlet is kind of a weird confusing thing but it’s made up of stones. One of those stones I knew about because it was in the Guardians of the Galaxy. I know nothing about the other stones.
6) runDisney really rocks the course music during Super Heroes races – seriously, the most pumped up music was playing and I was definitely into it.
7) Dancing Baby Groot is my spirit animal.
8) Thor loses his hammer at one point – so when I was dressed as Thor and running without a hammer it isn’t necessarily the worst costume ever.
9) Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are NOT Marvel and Patty will NOT cheer for them.
Moral of the story – Super Heroes are a blast.
I would end this post saying that if you aren’t a huge Super-Heroes fan, it’s totally cool and you should still go and run the race – other than the ugly challenge medal (sorry not sorry) – it’s a blast.
But. Nope. It’s over. Womp woooomp.
So instead, I’ll finish the post with the 10th thing I learned from this weekend, which is really number one.
10) Running with a group of hilariously crazy Super Hero fangirls – even when you know less than you “should” about that world – is the best.
The. Best.
Patty Holliday has been running Disney since 2011. She knows just about every tip, trick, and hack there is to cover the runDisney Magical Miles at Disney World and Disneyland. She knows every mile isn’t *always* magical- but with training, tips, and a little bit of pixie dust, they can be a lot of fun! You can also find her at noguiltlife.com and noguiltfangirl.com
Thats awesome that everything workout out and you were able to go do this race! Sounds like a lot of fun!
Yes! I still can’t believe that it all worked out so beautifully…
See how much fun you can have when you broaden your horizons? LOL… glad it all worked out for you!
Right?!?! I had so much fun… and I am kinda starting to get into this super hero thing…
I’ve never run any race like this at all- never Disney (but you make that sound like a blast) or anything with characters. While that’s too bad about Disney, I’m glad you were able to make this race work!
I highly recommend the races at Disney if you ever get the chance to do one <3
I am not a big Superhero person either but you can never go wrong with a Disney race. They are all so fun!
That is SO true!!!!!!
Disney races are so much fun! I’m glad I got to do at least one race weekend at DL.
Yes, me too! I always said I thought the races at Disneyland were better than the ones at Disney World – so I’m glad you got to do one, too!!!
I haven’t seen that many movies, but I know the gist. I wasn’t interested in Super Heroes, and then RnR Las Vegas was the same weekend. I will miss DL races since it’s so easy to get there from Denver.
That race was always on my bucket list! I hope they bring it back in the coming years because I really want to do it. I do all the East Coast Disney ones so I’d love to do more West Coast ones.
Well, I know even less than you about Super Heroes LOL I’m in Iowa, though, so the chances of all the stars, moons, and planets aligning to get me to a race (like what happened for you) is VERY slim. But, if all those magical forces blew my way, I’d be there, in a cape, and “wing it” as well 😉
Looks like you had a ton of fun! Glad it all worked out for you.
That’s great that you got to make it into the last one!
It sounds like soooo much fun!! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I’ve only done 1 Disney race and it was super fun!
Glad it all worked out for you. They are fun but cannot get over how expensive they are.
